A Shipment Of EVERYTHING

Christmas came early!

I freaked out that I wouldn’t be able to make enough jigs and rigs so I ordered a large (for me) shipment of 3d printing filament. I didn’t know how many things I’ll need to print so I just ordered more. Lots. Extra!

It arrived yesterday and I’m elated. It’s not just what I plan on printing, it’s that (within reason) I have the materials to print anything.

A box of filament spools, a pile of fresh dimension lumber, a stack of weldable steel. It’s not just stuff; it’s what one can make with it. The possibilities are only limited by my meager skills.

I spent more time than I planned just gazing at all that filament and thinking about what it might become. It has been a great holiday season!

O great wise Versatile Geezer, I seek knowledge and humbly beg thine advice.

From time to time you post highly amusing and instructive video clips from famous movies, cued to a moment of interest. O great guru, wouldst though instruct thy worthless servant in this art?

*cuddles up to enormous slobbering hairy canine, shares bacon treats to all and sundry*

It’s stupidly easy, that’s how I know how to do it.

Pick a video on YouTube. Here’s an example from King Arthur and the Holy Grail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAA-G947ofg

If you want to cue it up at a certain point watch it in the YouTube GUI. Pause at the moment you like. Look for the “share” button in YouTube. The share button will offer a clickbox that says “start at X” where X is the time you’re paused at. Click that and the share will offer a longer link. Here’s an example: https://youtu.be/YAA-G947ofg?t=175 This starts at 2:55 where King Arthur has had enough of some proto-hippie and the hippie is shouting “Witness the violence inherent in the system. Help, help, I’m being repressed.” (One of my favorite quotes.)

I don’t know what else is embedded in that link format. It’s safe to assume YouTube has embedded all sorts of nefarious bullshit; but it’s nice to go straight to your favorite quote. YMMV.

      Good luck.

**The possibilities are only limited by my meager skills.** The skills will improve with practice, what you can imagine is really the limiting factor! Along with physics, physics is another limit… have fun!

It is fun! I’ve learned a ton and only scratched the surface. I like that. 3d printing is a rabbit hole that goes deep. Another “super deep rabbit hole” I messed with is when I built a simple small sailboat. I was dancing on the edge of a vast place where you could develop all sorts of skills. Now that I think about it, physics is a big player in the world of sailing too.

The skill I need to work on first is 3d modeling. I’m using Fusion 360 and I’m perfectly happy with it but I can’t afford a full license. I am sure there are equally cool alternatives that are less overtly online and expensive. I don’t yet know what they are.
