Blazing Saddles

I was talking with a fellow about President “Most Votes In American History” Biden’s sanctions. Intended to punish Russia after it entered Ukraine, they’ve been somewhere between an “own goal” and a faceplant. I suppose charitably you could say they haven’t yet bankrupted everyone who’s against Russia… yet.

Is Pyrrhic sanctions a legit phrase?

I used an example from Blazing Saddles but he’d never seen Blazing Saddles! I was shocked; what a nightmare! This is far more important than geopolitics! Everyone needs to see Blazing Saddles!

I can’t believe he hasn’t seen it! We own it. What a great movie!

We can all laugh, but if more people still watched Mel Brooks’ library of work at a younger age, we wouldn’t be having so many problems with ‘adults’ in the room.

A great, funny movie that couldn’t be made today.

Couldn’t even be made 15 years ago. Ahhhh I miss the times when people (at least some of them) had a sense of humor.

I made it a point of honour to have DVDs of what I consider classic movies to show to my kids when they were growing up (when age appropriate, mostly 8 years old and up) – Blazing Saddles, Airplane, Animal House, The Gods must be crazy, Smokey and the Bandit, Naked Gun, all of the Monty Python movies, Drunken Master, Kung Pow, and others that have been mostly consigned to the non-PC trashcan. If nothing else, they now understand more of my references to everyday silliness….

Well done sir! Best use of DVDs ever.

I remember once practically forcing a couple Gen Z kids to watch Idiocracy. For five minutes they grumped about it. Then they started laughing and loved it. They wound up saying (just as I do) “it’s got what plants crave” from time to time in reference to situations around them

There’s a channel on Youtube calls “Matt’s Off-Road Recovery.” They added a new driver, Lizzy, who is 20-ish. She was wearing ear muffs while grinding on the frame for the new wrecker, and they were joking with her about looking like Princess Leia. Turned out she’d never seen any of the Star Wars movies and they got sidetracked explaining things to her.

I guess my parents would be shocked if they had ever known I never saw The Maltese Falcon. Well, at least I *heard* about it…

“Social literacy”. Blazing Saddles, Alice in Wonderland, etc. There’s a huge loss of social literacy because of the PC crowd. Rabbit hole, through the looking glass, it’s got what plant’s crave, catch 22 and many, many more quips that relay a movie or a book’s worth of back ground in a single phrase, without a 20minute dissertation on back ground, info, context. The dumbing down is proceeding according to plan. Thanks for a sane place to stop by. Tree Mike
