Last week I made a $10 impulse buy:
The best part is I got it from “some dude”. I met him while shopping at a woodworking store. The store didn’t carry a “brace” but this guy, whoever he was, had one in the backseat of his car and was glad to sell it. I think he roams the world picking up tools at garage sales and whatnot. He keeps them in his car to dispense (at a modest profit) to folks like me. He hangs out in woodworking shops looking for people who like tools that don’t have laser sights and two phase AC motors.
As far as I’m concerned he’s a tool based superhero.
Off-the-grid drillin’ at its finest. Nice purchase!
I wasted far too much time yesterday swearing voluminously at a cordless no-chuck-key-needed POS drill. Shoulda used a bit brace…
Off Grid Drilling!
I wish I’d thought of that phrase. Where were you when I was trying to come up with a title for my post?
I was swigging on a double B-39 watching a New Zealand murder mystery on (steel yourself) Public Television.
A razor-sharp wood bit and rotation at contemplative speed is a joy to behold. You made a fine purchase.
A double B-39? I’m looking forward to a drill that’s quiet and small. My little boat depended heavily on a drill… not for drilling so much as screwing in drywall screws long enough to let epoxy fillets set and then unscrewing them. I think a brace can handle that just fine.
Correction: B-69. Equal parts of: amaretto; frangelica; Bailey’s Irish Cream. Over a lot of ice.
Yum!
Ya know the auger bits that go with those drills are really pretty efficient. You’d never use a spade drill with a hand brace because you’d be cranking forever. But the auger bits drill nice holes and take a lot of wood out per turn.
That’s good to know. I’m going to suss out the bit and brace situation this winter and have high hopes it works well.
